A bear came at me in the deep woods. I had no gun and only two flints in my pocket. I threw one flint into its open mouth. The second flint followed the first. They struck each other deep in the bear, and the spark blew it apart.
People ask me if I was afraid. I tell them fear is for those without flints. The bear was large and quite hungry. It was not, I must say, well informed about flints or how they behave when thrown at speed down a throat.
I keep the flints on my desk today. They have grown smaller with age, as I have grown larger. Each year I tell this tale and each year the bear gets a little bigger. That is how a good bear should behave, in my opinion.
If you meet a bear, I give this advice. Carry two flints. Throw them hard and throw them straight. Do not stop to think about it, since thinking is slow and bears are fast. Stand well back after you throw the second flint, and keep your hat on.
