The Baron hanging from a rope below the Moon.
Fig. 67. The specimen, drawn from life.

Spiders in my attic wove me a fine coat when my tailor died. It took them one summer. The sleeves were light, the collar was warm, and the pockets trapped flies for my lunch. I wore it to court, and three duchesses at once asked for the pattern.

Roosters woke me too early, so I taught mine to crow at noon. The whole village soon lost track of the day. Bakers slept in. Priests said Mass at dusk. The mayor begged me to stop it, and I agreed, for a small pension and all the eggs in town.

Swiss children still sing of my skates. One icy winter on Lake Geneva I went so fast that I crossed it before I had left. I met myself coming back, and we bowed. Only one of us could pay the bill at the inn, so I sent him.

Sheep's clothing fools no one in my county. A wolf came to my gate wearing a full fleece, and I asked him to shear it for the poor. He blushed. He sewed mittens for forty orphans, and he now works as a shepherd in a village near Vilnius.

Trout leap into my hat when I whistle.
